    Windows VISTA (or newer) :
      - Download and execute the file "SETUP.EXE" from this website, or execute the file "SETUP.EXE" from the CD.
The program will be installed in the folder C:\users\public\trilobase_70.
Trilobase will also run under the 64 bit versions of Windows.

Click here for a video tutorial about the installation and first use of Trilobase.

The trilobase icon (a little trilobite) is placed on your desktop.
Click this icon or go to the start menu and select the Trilobase program.

The following screen is displayed :

Enter here your license code and click OK. The code is written on the inside of the CD case. You are only asked once to enter this code.
You can also try (demo mode) the full program. The demo version is identical to the official version. Please feel free to try out all the possibilities.
When you like the program and when you want continue using it, please register here.

The main screen is divided in 2 parts. The left part displays the fossil explorer and the group explorer.
The rigjt part dioaplys the information of the selected fossil.

- Add a new fossil

You can add a new fossil in 3 ways :
    1. Go to the menu "Edit" and select "Add fossil".
    2. Click the button "Add fossil" in the toolbar.
    3. Click the tag "Add new fossil" in the fossil explorer.
    The following screen appears :

Enter the number or reference of the fossil. This number must be unique and may not yet exist in the database. The number or reference can be any combination of numbers and letters.
    Click the "Add fossil" button.
You can also duplicate information from the fossil that is currently displayed into the new fossil. Just select the items that must be copied. This handy function speeds up the data-entry process.

-Add an image

Up to 6 images can be entered for each fossil. The images are stored in the database itself. Click the "Add Image" button and enter the filename. It is possible to enter several filenames at once.
The supported file formats are : JPG or JPEG (popular compressed image format - used by all digital cameras), PNG (compressed image format), GIF (compressed 256 colour image format) and BMP (bitmap image format).

Click the icon to open the image window. Here you can zoom into the details and perform some basic image manipulations. See also the "Image manipulations" section.

- Add geological information

The International Stratigraphic Chart (see also www.stratigraphy.org) is included in Trilobase.
Trilobase obtained an official permission to use this information.
Click the icon or doubleclick the Paleogeographical globe to display the timescale.

Select the geological period and click the "Copy" button. The geological information and the corresponding globe are copied to the current fossil.

- Add taxonomical information

Taxonomy is the pratice and science of classification of organisms. You can enter all this data manually or you can use the included taxonomical tables to (partially) fill in the information.
Click the icon to open the taxonomy window.

Several taxonomic tables are included in Trilobase :
    • Class Agnata
    • Subclass Ammonoidea
    • Superorder Belemnoidea
    • Class Bivalvia
    • Phylum Brachiopoda
    • Class Echinoidea
    • Class Foraminifera
    • Class Gastropoda
    • Class Graptolithina
    • Subclass Ostracoda
    • Class Placodermi
    • kingdom Plantae
    • Phylum Porifera
    • Class Scaphopoda
    • Class Trilobita

These taxonomic tables are compiled by several trilobase users. They are not always complete, and they do not always represent the latest information. Classification is an ongoing process and regularly, the taxonomical information changes.
More tables will be made available. Check the Free Downloads page.

- Making backups of your data

Computers can fail !!! Hard discs can crash !!! And sooner or later they will !!!

Making a backup, or safety copy, of your data is very important. This is also true for Trilobase. All the data and images of your fossils is stored in several databases on your computer. Making a backup is just making a copy of these databases.

When your computer fails, you can restore your precious data from your most recent backup.

XP users : This is the list of files and folders you have to backup :
    1. c:\program files\trilobase_70\trilobase.fdb : This is the database with all your fossils and images.
    2. c:\program files\trilobase_70\bibliography.fdb : This is the database with the bibliography.
    3. c:\program files\trilobase_70\sites.fdb : This is the database with the description of the fossil collecting sites.
    4. c:\program files\trilobase_70\sites : This folder AND ALL THE SUBFOLDERS contains the documents, photos, maps etc... of the fossil collecting sites.

VISTA and Windows7 users : This is the list of files and folders you have to backup :
    1. c:\users\public\trilobase_70\trilobase.fdb : This is the database with all your fossils and images.
    2. c:\users\public\trilobase_70\bibliography.fdb : This is the database with the bibliography.
    3. c:\users\public\trilobase_70\sites.fdb : This is the database with the description of the fossil collecting sites.
    4. c:\users\public\trilobase_70\sites : This folder AND ALL THE SUBFOLDERS contains the documents, photos, maps etc... of the fossil collecting sites.

Stop the Trilobase program (the files may not be in use) and copy all the above files and folders to a CD, DVD, another hard drive (internal or external), a ZIP drive or any other backup device.

Be sure to store this copy in a safe place. It is a good practice to make backups on a regular base (every week) and to keep the 2 or 3 last copies.

When you need to restore your computer, first install the Trilobase program from the CD or from the trilobase website. Secondly, copy the above files from your most recent backup to their original location. When you start Trilobase, you will find your data again.

DO NOT FORGET TO MAKE BACKUPS OF YOUR DATA !!!

- Installing Trilobase on a new computer (migrate)

Installing Trilobase on a new computer is very easy :

    1. Make a final backup of the data from your "old" computer. Store this data in a safe way.
    2. Install the Trilobase program from your CD or from the trilobase website on your "new" computer. Do not yet start Trilobase.
    3. Copy the backup files to their destination. These are the files and destinations :

XP users : This is the list of files and destinations :
      1. c:\program files\trilobase_70\trilobase.fdb : This is the database with all your fossils and images.
      2. c:\program files\trilobase_70\bibliography.fdb : This is the database with the bibliography.
      3. c:\program files\trilobase_70\sites.fdb : This is the database with the description of the fossil collecting sites.
      4. c:\program files\trilobase_70\sites : This folder AND ALL THE SUBFOLDERS contains the documents, photos, maps etc... of the fossil collecting sites.

VISTA and Windows7 users : This is the list of files and destinations :
      1. c:\users\public\trilobase_70\trilobase.fdb : This is the database with all your fossils and images.
      2. c:\users\public\trilobase_70\bibliography.fdb : This is the database with the bibliography.
      3. c:\users\public\trilobase_70\sites.fdb : This is the database with the description of the fossil collecting sites.
      4. c:\users\public\trilobase_70\sites : This folder AND ALL THE SUBFOLDERS contains the documents, photos, maps etc... of the fossil collecting sites.

    4. Start Trilobase. You will find all your data. You don't have to enter the access code.

Image manipulations
